Abortion is a Part of Life
In her latest book, Abortion & Life (Akashic, September 2008), Soapbox co-founder Jennifer Baumgardner goes beyond pro-choice and pro-life. Jennifer and photographer Tara Todras-Whitehill transcend politics and emphasize the voices and lives of the women (and men) involved in abortion. Jennifer's book launch begins on 9/23 at McNally Robinson Booksellers (NYC) and continues across the country.
Opt In, Women!
With her new book Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself (FSG, May 2008), Soapbox co-founder Amy Richards makes a case for feminism and motherhood—and creates space for a truce in the Mommy Wars. Elegantly weaving thorough research, choice anecdotes, feminist history, and her own example, Amy dispenses with the false choice between working and being a "good" mother.
Jennifer and Amy will be on the road together this fall with many dates on the West Coast.

With this year's presidential election quickly approaching, Sheryl Oring's "I Wish to Say" project allows people across the country to express themselves and connect to Democracy. Sitting at a typewriter, artist Sheryl Oring invites students to dictate postcards to the next President. One student at a time—so the only audience is the person sitting at her desk—she listens closely to what citizens want to say and types their words verbatim onto a postcard pre-addressed to the White House. Her moving, simple performance connects people to their own citizenship. Her work has been lauded everywhere from the Washington Post to NPR to the International Museum of Women.
