linda r. hirshman

hirshman2.jpgLinda R. Hirshman is the noted and controversial author of Get to Work : A Manifesto for Women of the World, published May 2007 by Viking. Hirshman's article, "Homeward Bound," on why women are trapped in the domestic world and how to get out (American Prospect 12/1/05), landed in the mommy wars like a rocket propelled grenade and became one of the books driving the discussion. She has appeared on Sixty Minutes, and, more recently, Good Morning America, the Colbert Report and NPR's Brian Lehrer Show. When she went on Good Morning America to advocate for the value of women working, the emails came so heavily they crashed the server at ABC News.

This summer, profiles of Linda and her work appeared in Elle magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Salon, Slate, Ms., the Boston Globe, and, most notoriously, the Washington Post ("Everybody Hates Linda"). Linda is out to restart the unfinished feminist revolution and she is not afraid to admit it (and the men on the right know what ís up). As the Reverend Albert Mohler, of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary put it, simply because they are out there now, Linda's ideas are changing the nature of the discussion. With almost no effort, she landed spot No. 77 on Bernard Goldberg's 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America.

Before she wrote Get to Work, Hirshman retired as the Allen/Berenson Distinguished Visiting Professor at Brandeis University, where she taught courses on Western political philosophy and the regulation of sex and violence. She is the author of Hard Bargains: The Politics of Sex and A Woman's Guide to Law School. HIrshman also taught and practiced law in Chicago for many years, and has participated in three cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. She is married and has three daughters.
