french2.jpgWhen Marilyn French published her 1977 novel The Women's Room, she extended the dialogue of women's liberation from the radical in the city to the housewife in the suburbs, launching thousands of book groups that, in turn, functioned as conscious-raising for a whole generation.

French instantly became a key fixture in the women's movement, writing eight more books including the sweeping Beyond Power: On Women, Men, and Morals (1985), which traced the rise of patriarchy. That book received the New Options Political Book Award. Most recently she turned her prodigious talent to adding women back into history with the 2002 publication of From Eve to Dawn: A Woman's History of the World.  In 2007 the Feminist Press published French's latest novel, In the Name of Friendship.

Marilyn French attended Hofstra College, receiving her B.A. and Masters before going on to attend Harvard University, where she received her doctorate. She has taught at both of her alma maters as well as College of the Holy Cross.
