Opt In, Women!

OptingIn.jpg

Is there a case for feminism and motherhood? Soapbox co-founder Amy Richards sounds an emphatic "yes" in her new book Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself (FSG, May 2008). Effortlessly weaving thorough research, choice anecdotes, feminist history, and her own example, Richards dispenses with the false choice between working and being a "good" mother. Publisher's Weekly says: "Scrolling through solid feminist history, she cogently examines issues involving mothers such as to work or not to work; the mania over one's biological clock; nonsexist child-rearing; balancing household work; and nurturing friendships with women and one's own mother."

Check out Amy on the road at McNally Robinson (NYC) on May 9th, R.J. Julia Booksellers (New Haven) on May 13th, Philadelphia Book Festival on May 17th, Bluestockings Bookstore (NYC) on May 19th, and Bookcourt (Brooklyn) on May 28th.

sheryloring.jpgDressed in vintage clothing and sitting at a typewriter, artist Sheryl Oring invites students to dictate postcards to the next President. One student at a time—so the only audience is the person sitting at her desk—she listens closely to what citizens want to say and types their words verbatim onto a postcard pre-addressed to the White House. Her moving, simple performance connects people to their own citizenship. Her work has been lauded everywhere from the Washington Post to NPR to SUNY Fredonia(!)
